A dentist appointment in SW Calgary will be a good experience when you are more relaxed. Your dental professional takes care of your teeth and gums by offering services to clean areas you cannot reach and identifying issues before they become problematic. Did you know there are things you can do too, ahead of your regular check-ups? Take some time to make your dental visit a smooth one by being prepared. Your dentist will appreciate it, and you will benefit.

Getting Ready for Your Dental Treatment

There are many things you can do as a patient to help the dental process be smooth. Preparation is key to oral exams and appointments.

  • Speak to Your Dentist – Before going in for treatment, you can book a chat with your dentist. This will answer any questions you may have and calm your nerves. Often, dental anxiety is due to the unknown, but when you are aware of how your treatment plan works, you will feel more at ease.

  • Be Early – Arriving for your dentist appointment about 15 minutes early is helpful. It ensures there is time to complete any required paperwork. This also helps you relax a little, especially if you are a little nervous. Find time to take a sip of water and read your favourite magazine while in the waiting room.

  • Brush and Floss – Brushing and flossing your teeth regularly helps the hygienist remove plaque and tartar more easily. Routine cleanings keep your oral cavity healthy which translates to fewer problems in the future.

  • Payment at the Ready – Sort out your payment plan ahead of time and communicate your preferences with the dental office before completing your treatment.  This will help prevent any delays and allow you to get the service you need without delay.

  • Communicate It – If you are feeling nervous about dental procedures, let your dentist know so they can accommodate you. They will offer a variety of sedation options for your utmost comfort. Be completely honest about any health issues or prescription medications you may be taking. This information helps the dentist proceed with procedures and limits risks associated with drug interactions.

  • Double Check – Take a minute to confirm the date and time of your booking. You don’t want to waste time going to the dentist only to realize your appointment is the next day or you completely missed a much-needed appointment. You will likely receive a message from your dental office confirming your appointment, but if you are still unsure, give them a call.

  • Fresh Breath – Take time to consider your dentist and pop a mint or use some mouthwash before your appointment. This will help you feel fresh and let your dentist work without being bothered by any negative oral odours.

  • Avoid Caffeine – Coffee may taste great and get you going for your day, but coffee jitters can cause you to wiggle around in the dentist’s chair. Excessive movement during treatment can make it difficult for an appointment to go smoothly. Your dentist will appreciate it if you are reasonably calm, and this can reduce the amount of time you need to be there. Head to your favourite café for your morning java after your dentist appointment in SW Calgary.

  • Go Natural – Eliminate your morning makeup routine before visiting the dentist. Even the best cosmetics can smear as your dentist maneuvers around your face to see deep inside your mouth.

  • Forget Those Large Jewels – Wearing lots of or large jewellery gets in the way of the dentist’s work. It is good practice to remove items like earrings, tongue jewelry, nose rings, and other facial adornments that could interfere with X-rays or dental tools.

  • Stop Brushing So Hard – You can get carried away with aggressive brushing just before a dental appointment. Diligent brushing on a regular basis is great for removing plaque and tartar after meals. Brushing vigorously just a few hours before your visit to the dentist will not trick them into thinking you have been keeping up with your oral health care. Brushing too hard only heightens your chance of injury to your gums and enamel. The tell-tale is typically bleeding and reddish gum tissue.
